Green fronds stay on
A palm cut back to a narrow spike looks tidy for a month and then struggles: the green fronds are what feeds it, and stripping them stresses the tree and invites the pests that kill it. Dead and dying fronds come off; the live ones do not.
Pods are the seasonal part
Seed pods are weight, mess and a job for somebody in the driveway. Taking them before they drop is most of what a scheduled trim is for.
